On Saturday 20th February 2021, the Climate Forum celebrated one year since it's launch with a very special hui.
Over 90 people attended the hui and acknowledged their commitment to climate action by signing the Climate Forum Charter.
Professor James Renwick and Ben Abraham of the Climate Change Commission presented and responded to questions from the Forum about the CCC's draft advice report that is open for submission until 28th March 2021.
Sophie Weenink, 15-year-old Nelson environmental activist and "Ecogirl NZ" spoke about her own journey of environmental activism, and how we can all play our part in climate response. Every act matters!
Our Climate Action Plan group presented the much-awaited Climate Action Book: A Climate Action Plan for Nelson Tasman. This Book has been a year in the making and represents the collation of months of work by the Forum's many working groups, carefully brought together by our Climate Action Plan group. Julie Nevin, our Forum Chair facilitated a very constructive consensus process to determine whether the Forum was ready to adopt the Climate Action Book. The vast majority of Forum members were in support of adopting the Climate Action Book. Some significant concerns were raised by members of the Ecosystems & Biodiversity Group regarding the structure of pages 18 & 19, with the view that these pages need to be restructured to consider how we support a healthy natural world, with a focus on looking after all other species. The Forum agreed to a process whereby the Ecosystems & Biodiversity group, the Climate Action Plan group and the two Forum members who raised concerns about the importance of carbon sequestration would go away and redraft these two pages, and present them to the Forum at the March online hui.
If you missed the hui, you can view the presentations via the links below.
If you're ready to make your own commitment to climate action, you can sign the Climate Forum Charter by completing this form. The hard-copy ceremonial version of the Charter will be available for signing at each of the Forum's face-to-face hui, held quarterly.
A huge thank you to Tim Cuff for capturing the video footage of the presentations at the hui, and also the photographs you see below.
